What will happen in five years?

A New Trend in School Uniforms

By Sao Hikino

I predict that Japanese students who need wear same school uniforms in each schools will be less than now, and they will select to wear skirts or pants freely regardless of gender in the future. I have two reasons. First, all people should think about LGBTQ. LGBTQ is necessary factor that all people live without sex discrimination. There is the tendency that more Japanese people start to understand them than before. So, if many Japanese people continue to think about LGBTQ, they will notice the possibility that human rights are violated by the school uniform systems. Second, more women start wearing men’s clothes, and men start wearing makeup than five years ago. Young people begin to think that we can wear everything regardless of gender. If many young people have the idea, schoolgirls may wear a typical Japanese school uniform for boys, and schoolboys may wear skirts in each school.

Japan will go cashless

By Kurumi Okajima

I think a cashless system will spread in Japan more than now, because a large number of people are starting to use electronic money in Japan now. Cashless payment is very convenient. If you have it, you don’t need to carry cash with you. Also, cashless systems will solve the labor shortage in Japan. It is thought that an unmanned cash counter is one way to make up for labor shortages in Japan which suffers from declining birthrate. So, a cashless system will spread in Japan in five years.

People will lose jobs

By Jinki Sakashita

I predict that in five years, the form of work will change. This is because AI and ICT technologies, are developing at a furious pace. If this goes further, human jobs will be lost to machines. For example, a desk job such as a bank or city hall will no longer be necessary. I think that if automated driving technology is developed, there will be no need for train and bus drivers. In this way, I can predict that the world will become more convenient, but if this happens, many people will not be able to find work. In other words, there is a danger that machines with no labor costs will take over human jobs in five years.

A Food Revolution

By Tomoki Onishi

What I think will change in the next five years is our food life. For one thing, the population is increasing in the world. So more and more people will suffer from starvation. We can expect that we will need far more foods soon if these situations get worse. A new food has been produced, food made from bugs. One example is “Euglena” cookies, which are made from plants, insects, and dried worms. Some of us might never try these products, but others are willing to take them when we have nothing else to eat. Our lifestyles have adjusted to the environment in the past, so it is possible that we will see a revolution in foods in the near future.

U-Shimane Go Online

U-Shimane Go Online

by Mariko Eguchi

After the Ministry of Education in Japan suddenly issued a notice on March 24, 2020, allowing the Japanese universities to go online, professors and students as well as administrators are experiencing a new mode of teaching and learning.

Despite Japan being technologically advanced, the education sector still favors the traditional methods of delivering knowledge: the teacher explaining ideas in front of the blackboard in a classroom. However, the default teaching was denied due to the serious health risk posed by the corona virus pandemic. It was impossible to stick to the familiar teaching style. Nonetheless, the decision to go online was very confusing to everyone.

The teachers and students of the University of Shimane experienced for the first time a shift from face-to-face education to online education. Except a few courses, all the classes are taught either synchronous online teaching or asynchronous on-demand teaching. Both teachers and students have a lot to say about this new mode of education. The followings are students’ perspectives toward their online experiences.

Learning effectively without stress

By Reina Yamane

Recently, a lot of university’s professors give some lectures on the network because of the coronavirus. I think online education is good because students can learn comfortably without stress.

First, we can take a lecture at home. This solves the risk of being late to the classroom, because we do not need hurry in the morning to catch a bus. It is so comfortable for me to stay home all day.

Second, online study is easy for some students to present their opinions to other students. If someone is called on during class in the classroom, she should speak in front of everyone, but some students may feel pressure, and she might not be able to say anything.

However, online participants can comment in the chat box, speak using a microphone, send stickers during online lessons. In online lessons, students don’t have to worry about what others think about themselves.

It is true it is hard to meet friends face to face, but I can contact other classmates even when we are apart. When someone feels lonely, we can meet during online classes and hear the voice of others. It brings a sense of security.

Saving money and energy

By Yutaro Mitsu

Online education has good points. First of all, as you do not need to go to school, financial burden of going to school is reduced. For example, expenses such as gasoline of a motorcycle or the bus fare became needless. Students can save transportation cost.

Also online education saves the physical strength. Going to school is tiring because students live downtown, but the university is located on top of a hill. Staying at home is more comfortable.

Difficulty in online communication

By Ruura Fukunaga

Japanese colleges currently use online class to prevent coronavirus infection, but online class is not necessarily a good way for teachers and students. In my view, the face-to-face class in the classroom is better for several reasons.

First of all, teachers and students are not well-prepared for online lessons, because they experience online class for the first time. So, we must learn to use computers. I often hear teachers and students, “It is hard to do classes through computer.”

In particular, it seems hard for teachers to prepare online lessons. Furthermore, it is difficult to communicate each other. Teachers cannot tell how well students can understand the lecture. It is difficult for students to ask questions, too. If there is a way to stop the coronavirus crisis, I want to take classes in the classroom.

Disadvantages of Online Lectures

By Saki Suyama

Although there are some advantages to being given lectures online, I prefer being taught by teachers at the university to being given lectures online. In my opinion, studying from teachers in the same classroom definitely enables us to concentrate and to spend a more meaningful time for several reasons.

First of all, it is hard for students to prepare each lecture’s handouts in advance. Students have to download them and print them. If some students don’t have a printer, they must go to Media Center or a convenience stores.

Also, we are under a big stress from being seen by others. Many people are shy, so they feel very uneasy to be seen so, they turn off their cameras, and shut down the important channel of good communication. If students turn off the video, teachers can’t see students’ faces, so teachers can’t know if students really understand what teachers said. So, we can’t communicate with each other well.

Aquas, Best Aquarium in Japan

By Mai Nakada

AQUAS is the best aquarium I have ever seen. We can see about 400 kinds of interesting fish and no less than 10,000 creatures. In this aquarium, we can see the most fish in the Chugoku region.

Therefore, we won’t tire of seeing them.   My favorite fish tank is the shark tank. There are several types of sharks, for example bullheaded sharks. They look funny and pretty! One of the most important reasons I love this aquarium is we are able to see white dolphins.

White dolphins cannot be seen in many aquariums in Japan. So, if you go to AQUAS, you can go through the rare experience! That is why, I would recommend that you go to AQUAS at least once!

Discovering interesting creatures

By Ryu Harada

I always enjoy walking in hamada these days. we can see various things like beetles and flowers, inhabitants, even a beautiful view throughout the walking. Almost all of them are very characteristic because Hamada is located among the nature. There are few places where we can enjoy  living among nature like hamada in Japan.

I often run into cute creature like beetles and reptiles. Finding them make me happy because I can see many kinds of them four times a year. Take butterflies for example. When we run into them, we think that the spring has come. In addition, I feel relaxed and lucky when I find stag beetles, too.

We can see not only beetles but also inhabitants. Recently, I often talk with an old man who has a big black dog as a pet. At first, our connection was just greeting. However, we are good terms with each other by my praising his dog. We even talk about our family nowadays. You may be able to meet someone who be on good terms with you.

What’s more, we can see even the beautiful view. There are many beautiful views in Hamada. In particular, I think that we can see the most beautiful view from Yuhi-Park-Hamada. The view that the sun set in the  Sea of Japan is very attractive for all people. For the first time I see the view, I thought that it was beyond description.

Why don’t you enjoy walking in Hamada, too?

If you begin this habit, You will be able to find various things that you haven’t ever notice  about Hamada.

Fresh sea foods

By Kyoka Wakabayashi

Hamada is rich in nature. I’m sure you will have a good time if you visit in Hamada. First of all, there are many beautiful scenes in Hamada. Especially, I like to see the sunset which is amazing from the view line in the University of Shimane. I recommend you to take a camera if you visit in Hamada. Second, Hamada is facing the Japan’s sea. So Hamada has a lot of fish and you can eat fresh fish. I like BATOU, which is a famous fish in Hamada. Finally, there are some hot springs surrounded by nature in Hamada. For example, “MIMATA ONSEN” is a famous hot spring in Hamada. You can view a waterfall while taking an open-air bath. Therefore, Hamada is in the countryside but it is a very good place. I think you can enjoy yourself if you go to Hamada.

2020 Entrance Ceremony held at the University of Shimane

With Shimane prefecture’s being one of the three corona virus free prefectures in Japan, the University of Shimane held the entrance ceremony on April 2, 2020 as scheduled.

In welcome address, the University Shimane’s President, Dr. Masayoshi Kiyohara congratulated the 248 undergraduate and graduate students, wishing a fruitful and enjoyable student life ahead. He stated the college experiences form the foundation of an individual as it is the time to foster various abilities such as creativity, understanding, cooperation, overcoming difficulties through meeting a variety of new people.

Dr. Kiyohara encouraged the new students to play an active part in various fields of the campus and community as the “anchors” of the Faculty of Policy studies, as they are the last cohort of the faculty, which will be reorganized into the Faculty of International Relations and the Faculty of Regional Policy Studies in 2021.

Miss Momone Kakita made an oath on behalf of the new students, promising that they would like to acquire foreign language and communication abilities as well as expert knowledge on policy studies to contribute to the development of society.

The entrance ceremony was shortened this year for 20 minutes with health authorities recommending social distancing in order to prevent the corona virus from spreading across Japan.

Announcing all the students’ names, speeches by guests, singing songs and photo shooting were cancelled.

The mother of a freshman, who waited outside of the auditorium, said that she was very pleased at the fact the University of Shimane did not cancel the entrance ceremony, as it is a very memorable day for parents.

Mr. Takenao Masuda, a male student, said he liked the short ceremony. For him the most memorable part of the ceremony was the song Dr. Kiyohara offered: The breeze of spring across the hills, to tell the start of new learning. He would like to learn a lot of new things so that he can become someone who can make people smile.

Despite the request of social distancing, the freshmen hung out in front of the auditorium. They took photos and discussed what to do for a week, because the orientation programs and classes will be cancelled next week. They will have nothing to do until Monday, April 13.

Students were wondering when they would receive their PC’s, how to log on the University’s wifi network, which courses to register, etc. A lot of students were at loss because face to face orientations were cancelled, and they must read written documents with college jargons to navigate the first few weeks in a new environment.

Creepy Crypt Tales

Maggots

By Mariko Eguchi

When I was a high school student, I lived in an old house. One night, I studied at night. It was a hot and humid night. I stood up to go to bathroom and walked to the door, when I stepped on something. I looked at the sole of my bare foot and found a maggot stuck on it. The maggot was still alive. I threw it away and shouted, “Mom!”

My mother came to me out of the kitchen. She asked, “What’s the matter?” I said, “There was a maggot on the floor!”

Then I felt something fall on my hair. I stroked my hair. I found a shiny white maggot between my fingers. Horrified, I shook it off madly, shouting “Oh, no!”

Then my mother said, “Look!”

I looked up and I saw a patch of maggots wiggling on the ceiling, just about to fall down. They were extremely disgusting.

She said, “there is something up there.”

Bravely, she opened the closet door and climbed on the upper board. She pushed up the ceiling board, stuck her head in the attic. I followed her. She shone the attic floor with a flashlight. The musty and dusty smell came to my nose.

On the other side of the ceiling, there was a mound of maggots eating a dead rat.

 A Centipede

By Riku Nagata

When I was a junior high school student, I came home always tired from my club activities. I used to stay up to midnight, but on that day I slept earlier than usual, because I was really tired.

I went to the bathroom before going to bed. Then I noticed the window was open. So I closed it. Then I went into my bed, plugged my ears with earphones, then tried to sleep listening to music.

After a short time, I was getting sleepy. Then I felt something on my right arm. I thought the earphone cord, and I swung it off. Soon I fell asleep.

After that, I felt something on my neck. I thought the earphone cord hit me again, so I shook it off. However, that think moved from the neck to the mouth. I tried to remove it, but it moved from the mouth to the ear, and then to the nose.

I got annoyed and caught it with my right hand. I turned on the light and was alarmed at the identity of it. It was a big centipede!

I got panicked and tried to throw it out of the window. I tried to open the window near my bed. That centipede is moving to my shoulder!

I shook my arm madly and it was thrown to the wall. As a result, I lost sight of the centipede. It hid itself somewhere in my bedroom. But I heard it moving around.

I was so scared that I ran out of the room. On that night, I slept on the living room sofa.

The next morning, I looked around inside of my bedroom for the centipede. I found a dead centipede. The body was broken into pieces. At first, I was relived. But it was different from the one I saw the previous night. The dead one was smaller. The one I saw was at least 10 centimeter long.

A Spider

By Kazuya Miyashita

In one cold and silent night, I didn’t feel good. So I finished my work earlier and came home. It was two o’clock midnight. My apartment was very old. I went upstairs.

I opened the door. My room was dark and silent. I heard some spooky sounds. It sounded like a rustle of old paper. I was scared, so I immediately turn on the light.

My room was quiet. Nothing was moving. But I certainly heard something. Then I heard the same noise again! Something was there! I got panicked. I said “What was it? What was it?” Fearfully I looked around.

At the corner of the room I saw an enormous spider. It had long legs. It ran toward me!

I really hate spiders! I rushed out of my room.

I must kill the spider, I thought. I took a long broom and got into the room again, trying to kill the spider.

When I tried to poke the spider, it suddenly jumped at me. I madly swung the broom!

The broom that I shook somehow hit the spider. The spider stopped moving. I thought the spider was dead.

Then using the broom, I tried to throw it into a trash box. Suddenly the spider started to move! The spider was pretending to be dead!

In a hurry I knocked it many times… many times… all over the place. The spider was dead. I threw it away in the trush box in a hurry.

When I took a deep breath, I heard another sound from behind.

“Ruffles, ruffles…”

Alone in a Dormitory

By Sayuri Kakuta

I live in a dormitory where a lot of international students live. One summer night I was unable to sleep. It was a quiet night, because all residents went back to their home countries. I was the only person in the building.

So, I started to watch YouTube videos. I found myself watching make-up videos for about 2 hours, but I was so awake that I couldn’t sleep at all. So, I decided to watch something else. Then I was attracted to a war movie, remembering that the end of the World War II came on a hot summer day. I thought I should watch a war movie to learn how people lived during the war. I started to watch the movie in my silent room. I heard only movie sounds.

In the movie, people were killed by guns. I was watching some people without arms or legs or other parts of the body. I was listening to roars of airplanes and shots. Then, suddenly I heard noise. I felt something was moving outside of my room. But I didn’t know what was moving. The noise became bigger and bigger. I couldn’t help remembering a scary scene in the war movie. I couldn’t move and held my stuffed bear. But my stuffed bear couldn’t help me, because it couldn’t move too. I froze on my bed with my teddy bear.

After a while, the sound stopped. I was a little relieved and I went out of my room in order to check the cause of noise. I walked through the dark hallway alone.

In the kitchen water was dropping slowly. Then something moved again with big sounds. I was upset and went back to my room, but I couldn’t open the door of my room, because my hands were so wet with sweat.

At that time, the door of the room next to mine opened slowly with dull sounds. It should not open, because the student in the room was not here. I knew she went back to her country during summer vacation. I cried out for help. Then the student who standing in front of me cried out too.

After that, I learned she came back to Japan earlier and used the washing machine at night.

The Door of my Apartment

By Himeka Fuchi

One day, I went home after my part-time job. It was already dark, so I ran home.

I was panting when I arrived at my apartment. I inserted the key and I tried to open the door.

However, when I grasped the doorknob, the door opened. I was surprised, because I didn’t turn the key, yet. I felt a spine-tingling chill. I thought that someone was in my home.

So, I called my friend who lived next door and entered the room together, but there was no one. I called my mother on the phone and talked about this thing. My mother was afraid.

Two hours later, the bell of my home rang. I thought of a man who wanted to open my house standing with a knife in his hand. I didn’t open the door. The dell rang many times. My heartbeat was faster, but it didn’t stop ringing. So, I reluctantly peek at the peephole and I could see two policemen there. I got quite relieved to discover so and opened the door.

The policeman said it might be a case, but I wanted to believe that I had forgotten closing the door. So, I told the policeman that I thought I just had forgotten locking the door and asked him not to worry about it.

The next day, when I went to university, I double checked the lock with my friend. I thought that everything would be okay.

I went to my part-time job, and came back as usual at night. I said to myself that that day everything would be okay, and I told it to myself again and again.

However, when I grasped the door, the door was not locked. The door was not locked. It was the second time that the door was not locked. I felt a spine-chilling fear. This time I didn’t forget locking the door because I had my friend check the door closed. I thought that my house was in danger and I couldn’t live in this house. So, I stayed at my friend’s house for a while.

Phone calls at Night

By Shusuke Toda

It was a humid and spooky night. I was exhausted in my apartment. On that night at about half past eleven, I got a phone call from the number I didn’t know. I did not answer. Then I just left it and went to bed since I had class the next day, but my phone started to ring again in the mid-night. It made me little scared so I tried to pretend I could not hear.

The phone stopped ringing but after a while I heard the noise of something knocking outside. I listened to the sound since I could not sleep because of the mysterious phone call. I noticed that the sound was the noise of someone or something knocking on my window. I could not believe it because my room had a porch and the porch was about three meters high from the ground! It made me more scared, but the terrible night would not finish.

The phone call came again from the same unknown number. I was freaking out by the phone call and the knocking of the window. I wanted to try to ask my friend for help, but my phone was ringing at the moment and I was afraid my phone was hacked.

I tried to run away out of my house. Just I was about to to get out of my house, I heard another knocking sound knocking on the next door. It came closer and closer to my door. I was locked in my room without a way to get out of the house or to call someone for the help. I was so scared in the house alone.

I went to the bed and crawled inside the bed trying to pass this horrible night and wait for the light of the shining morning, but I heard another sound in the knocking of the window, door, and the phone.

I thought I was going mad because of the noise. Then I found the origin of the sound. It was my alarm. I was just having a horrible nightmare.

Nutrition major students promote health and beauty

Students majoring nutrition educated students and citizens at Hamada Campus of the University of Shimane on October 13, 2019, presenting their research results at the University’s school festival open to the public.

Students from the Department of Health and Nutrition presented their research results on the survey of eating habits of college students.

Healthy eating habits

By Ayaka Kawamoto, Moeka Kobayashi, Chihiro Sasaki, Manami Shirao, Rina Sota, and Kanon Tsuji

According to the research conducted by a group of students majoring nutrition, both male and female students look at the energy figure in the label of the nutrition values.  They also found boys tended to buy prepared foods at convenience stores more often than girls. Generally speaking, college students tend to consume excessive carbohydrates.

This result is no wonder because many university students live alone in apartments away from their families, feeling cumbersome to cook proper meals every day. College students are busy due to classes and part-time jobs. How can they improve their eating habits? If a student buy a boxed lunch, salad and yogurt at a convenience store, it would be healthier but too expensive.

Based on their research findings, they proposed a wise shopping habit. They suggested that students should buy fruits and dairy products such as oranges, milk and yogurt at a supermarket and keep them in the fridge at home, and that they should eat these when they eat prepared boxed lunch from a convenience store.  In this way, students will be able to enjoy a healthier diet with a good balance of nutrition, but it will be still not so expensive.

At the end of their presentation, the young nutrition experts asked the audience which one should combine with spaghetti: potato salad or cut vegetable.

The correct answer is cut vegetable. Thanks to their educational presentation, most of the audience answered correctly. Their educational presentation was a great success!

One male student asked why they were so beautiful, although the answer was obvious. Good food!

The students are aspiring to be certified dietitians when they graduate from college. The Department of Health and Nutrition at the University of Shimane is the first program for registered dietitians in the area.

Beauty from within

By Koharu Ichoda, Saya Sugai and Aiko Maejima

What is beauty? You might think beauty is the result of good make-up and fashion. For young nutrition experts, nutritious foods are the source of beauty. In order to be truly beautiful, you should eat good foods including vegetables and fruits.

The students made a presentation of healthy eating habits using models and panels. They demonstrated how protein contributed to formation of muscles and internal organs in the human body.

They explained to the audience how protein taken into the body from foods were broken down into amino acids in the body and turned into new proteins for the skin, hair and all the parts of the human body. In other words, beauty is the result of this cycle of amino acids.

There are two types of protein. The animal protein is included in meat and fish. The vegetable protein is included in beans and serials. Both types have different health benefits, so it is wise to take in both of them.

They introduced a recipe for beauty as follows:

Tuna toast

Ingredients:

One piece of bread

Half a can of tuna

Half a pack of fermented beans called natto

Appropriate quantity of mayonnaise

1. Apply mayonnaise lightly on bread

2. Spread tuna and natto on the bread

3. Toast it for 3 to 4 minutes

This recipe is easy to prepare. The students hope that male students of Hamada Campus try this recipe. The Hamada Campus has a lot of male students as the major is policy studies.

Natto is a fermented soybean food popular in Japan.

Common purpose and teamwork produce friendship

By Ayaka Joichi, Yu Takayama and Sachika Yashiro

An international collaborative activity between Korean students and Japanese students brought joy of learning and fulfilling relationships among the students majoring in nutrition.

The joint study seminar was conducted in Oki Island, an island off Shimane Prefecture, Japan in July, 2019 by Department of the Department of Health and Nutrition of the University of Shimane.

Three Korean students from Daegu Health College joined in the international study seminar of eating habits in Japan, which was organized in an effort to educate young students to become registered dietitians.

The Korean and Japanese students conducted a survey together to investigate the eating habits of residents in the remote island.

The students had an opportunity to present their results at a local store, but they faced great difficulty of collecting listeners, because they were not able to use a microphone. It was very challenging to gain the attention of shoppers.

The heart-broken students learned to speak louder and to hook the audience with interesting remarks and gestures.

It was very challenging for Korean students to ask questions in Japanese because their spoken Japanese was limited.

Both Korean and Japanese students formed a strong friendship because they stayed under the same roof for three nights. The Korean students cooked breakfast and dinner and they chatted in English and Japanese at night. One night when Japanese students, who were still in the middle of the semester, studied late at night for their final exams, the Korean students brought some fruit for night snack saying “yashoku” which means “meal for night.” The Japanese students were very grateful.

What made the seminar special was the common purpose. The participants in this seminar are young students who want to become nutrition specialists. It was easy for them to overcome linguistic and cultural differences because they were bound together by a common purpose to make the world a better place by promoting health. They felt as if they were part of a team.

The students also visited a facility for disabled people, where they had an opportunity to interact with people of disability, and they were impressed by how people with disabilities contributed to the society.

This joint seminar is part of the international agreement between the University of Shimane and Daegu Health College. The 83 freshmen and sophomores of the Department of Health and Nutrition participated in the exchange with the Korean students.

The Things I Love about Traveling Abroad

Park Geun Yeong
University of Ulsa

There are many things that I have come to love while traveling abroad, but there are three specific things that stand out. First, I usually fall in love with the scents of the country I am visiting. When you arrive at the airport by plane, you can smell it. Air temperatures are also different so you can feel and remember them better. For example, when I arrived in Indonesia, I smelled the stuffy, moist air with a touch of sweet and sour scent of flowers.

In Indonesia, I found out that the flower Franzipani is similar to the fragrance of the flower. Second, I liked the taste of tropical fruits and was fascinated by them. The tropical fruits I refer to here are not pineapples or bananas that can easily be found in Korea, but mango, mangosteen, and durian. The first time I became interested in tropical fruits was when a friend from the Philippines gave me dried mango as a gift. Since then, I remember eating ice cream with my friend mainly because it tasted like mango. It was when I went to Cambodia that I actually ate other raw fruits. I went there with a friend who had been eating mango ice cream with us, and even before we went, we promised to eat mango until we were sick of it. But we have, ironically, fallen in love with the juicy, sweet taste of mangosteen. This is still my favorite fruit. We ate durian, and it was really hard for me then, but now I really think it is delicious.

The last thing I enjoy about traveling, which I think may also be the driving force behind this article, are the fond healing memories I make. When I think about the things I love before going to bed, I can feel a little bit of happiness. I love songs that I heard often when I was traveling, or scenes that I experienced, and feel extremely fortunate to have made so many good memories while traveling. In order to make more memories such as these, I will travel and keep a record of them on future trips.

Okunojima: Rabbits’ Paradise

Rikuya Takatani
University of Shimane

Hiroshima has an island called Okunojima. There are many rabbits on this island. Many tourists come to see the rabbits. But this island has a sad past.

As I got off the passenger boat and approached the pier, the white and brown “MofMof” quickly crossed my line of sight. Rabbits on the road, rabbits on the plaza, rabbits on the slope. Rabbits live everywhere on this small island, about 4 km around. The island had a former army poison gas plant from 1929 until the end of the war. After being processed and taken over by the US military, it was finally returned to Japan after 57 years. After that, the National Holiday Village opened in 1983, and it was reborn as a resort area. Why are there rabbits on this island? As I walk on the island, I notice there are holes in and around here and there. All the rabbits are wild rabbits. It is an “alien species”. Although there is a theory that they were brought in for poison gas experiments and survived, there is also a theory that eight animals were released by primary school children from off the island in 1971 and they have been breeding ever since.

There are natural enemies of baby rabbits such as crows, owls, and snakes on the island. Looking for the appearance of rabbits, many tourists, including foreigners, are coming now. However, most of them do not know the history of Okunojima. That is a problem of Okunojima. Go through the tunnel at the 2nd pier on the right and there are the remains of a power plant. It supplied heavy fuel oil at the time of poison gas production and was also used for manufacturing balloon bombs. Although you cannot enter, the unique decaying atmosphere is a masterpiece even from the outside. Inside the island there are also the ruins of a fort, citadel, Nagaura Poison Storehouse, gunpowder storehouse, as well as a poison gas museum where you can learn the history of poison gas production.

Some of the tourists coming to Okuno Island seek out the history of this poison gas production. However, families with young people and children do not visit these places so much, but maybe these people

should also learn about the dark history.

Rise of Study Tribes in Korean Cafes

An Ju Hui, University of Ulsan

The phrase Ca-gong-jok is a newly-termed word that is an abbreviation of Korean words meaning “study tribe in a café”, and refers to those people who study for long periods of time in one café setting. In Korea, the number of Ca-gong-jok is increasing steadily and this phenomenon makes for endless debates.

The affirmative side states that the cost of the beverage fee includes the right to enjoy the relaxed ambience of the cafe. In fact, according to some research, white noise improves work efficiency. Sounds such as background music or humming or the sound of friendly conversation helps one to concentrate more deeply. Therefore, the positive opinion of Ca-gong-jok is somewhat based on scientific grounds. Moreover, when people have to work in groups, it is convenient to gather in a cafe for a meeting, since people cannot talk one another in a library. Other research results show that studying through discussion with others is more effective than just studying by oneself, and that a cafe where people can study with other people in a cozy atmosphere may just be the best place to learn.

In contrast, most of the opponents are owners of café’s. The more Ca-gong-jok who study in their cafes, the fewer customers they are able to serve. Once a Ca-gong-jok sit at a table, they usually spend at least 2-3 hours studying. Although they purchase a cup of coffee, it could not exceed the sales to other customers. Furthermore, they use electricity, Wi-Fi, water resources and so forth. Even if it seems small, the total costs could place a heavy burden on owners. In addition, some Ca-gong-jok occasionally glare at other customers in order to make them keep quite. So even if the one of the purposes of going to cafe was to talk or chat with friends, these kinds of stares would put an end to it, and could lead to a decline of customers. It is no wonder why so many owners are feeling apprehensive.

All in all, Ca-gong-jok deserve to be treated the same as any other customers. In my opinion, the atmosphere of café spaces let people feel unconventional and refreshed and that perhaps leads to increased concentration. Provided that these new tribes comprehend the difficulties faced by owners and moderate their behavior, they might just become a new culture of the cafe industry globally.

Global Warming and the Loss of Biodiversity in Brazil

Glenda Souza da Silva

Centro Universitário de Jaguariúna

In recent years, the planet has been affected by rising temperatures that have generated major concerns throughout the country. This is due to a phenomenon known as global warming, which is caused by burning fossil fuels such as gasoline, coal, diesel oil. It has also been caused by industries and non-renewable energy production, pollution and forest deforestation.

Brazil, because it is located near the equator and because it is a region that receives the sun’s rays with greater intensity, will feel the effects of the temperature changes affecting the country directly. In addition, because it has large coastal areas, it becomes vulnerable, as global warming intensifies the melting in Antarctica, which consequently increases sea level.

Another concern here is the impact of deforestation on animals. Animals, such as jaguars, blue macaws, maned wolves, among many others, are on the list of endangered animals in Brazil. The country is considered the richest in biodiversity in the world, but the loss of biodiversity is a worrying factor when talking about nature. It is estimated that the deforestation will cause the loss of the natural habitat of animals, causing these species to stop living. Scholars have reported that if the forest reaches between 20% and 25% of its area, it will be considered a climatic abyss.

To try to reverse this situation in the Amazon, actions such as reforestation have already been carried out. The fight for the preservation of species has increased, and with animals that are in serious danger of extinction, projects such as artificial insemination have already been carried out.

There must be a global awareness of how such factors are detrimental to life, not only to animal and plant life, but also to the quality of life of people.

Measures such as expanding the generation of energy through clean and renewable sources must be implemented by the country. Only then can we hope for a better future for both society as a whole and our beautiful natural biodiversity
